Gov. Dan McKee signed a proclamation Tuesday recognizing June as Pride Month in Rhode Island.
“By proclaiming June as Pride Month, Rhode Island has the chance to honor the contributions and recognize the resilience of the LGBTQ+ individuals throughout the Ocean State,” McKee said in a statement. “Rhode Island is a state built on love, respect, and inclusion; and as Governor, I will continue to fight for equality for everyone.”
Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos said the proclamation reflects a commitment to maintaining protections for the LGBTQ+ community.
“Recognizing Pride Month is our commitment that Rhode Island will not give an inch to any attempts to roll back the hard-won rights of the LGBTQ+ community,” Matos said. “Our state is founded on the values of tolerance and self-determination, and we will always stand up for those principles.”
According to the governor’s office, the State House will be illuminated in Pride colors later in the evening, and the Pride progress flag will be flown.
The proclamation, signed by McKee and Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore, notes that June is internationally recognized as Pride Month in commemoration of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City. It states that the people of Rhode Island reaffirm their commitment to serving as allies, creating inclusive communities, advancing protections for LGBTQ+ individuals and promoting acceptance for all.
