The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority kicked off its third annual No Pollute Commute Bike to Work Challenge on Friday, inviting commuters across the state to swap car trips for bike rides throughout May in recognition of National Bike Month.
The free challenge, organized by RIPTA’s Commuter Resource RI team, runs through May 31. Participants can sign up at drivelessri.com, create an account and log their trips for chances to win prizes. Riders do not have to bike the entire way to work to qualify — a single trip to a local bus or train stop counts.
RIPTA officials say the program is meant to encourage healthier, more sustainable commutes. Biking to work can save money, improve physical and mental health, reduce traffic congestion and lower emissions, according to the agency.
The transit authority is also reminding riders that all RIPTA fixed-route buses are equipped with bicycle racks that hold up to two bikes, allowing commuters to combine cycling and transit on longer trips.
Throughout the month, the Commuter Resource RI team will host Celebration Stations with raffle prizes, giveaways and snacks for cyclists. The Newport stop is set for Friday, May 15 — Bike to Work Day — from 7 to 9 a.m. at Newport City Hall, 43 Broadway, sponsored by Bike Newport.
Other stations are scheduled throughout the month at locations including Memorial Park in Providence on May 6, the East Bay Bike Path entrance in East Providence and Providence Train Station on May 13, Mythic Bikes in South Kingstown on May 14, and the Providence Innovation District Park on May 20 and May 27. Cyclists who meet at Saugatucket Park at 8 a.m. on May 14 can ride together to Mythic Bikes for a grab-and-go breakfast.
The challenge wraps up with a closing party on Thursday, May 28, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Narragansett Brewery, 271 Tockwotton St., Providence. Cyclists are invited to stop by for a complimentary refreshment and views of the Providence River.
Community sponsors include NBX Bikes, Cleverhood, Friendly Bike Shop, Manhattan Portage Bags, Beautiful Day and Narragansett Brewery.
Commuter Resource RI works year-round to promote RIPTA ridership and other green transportation options, including carpools, vanpools and biking. Commuters who need help planning a trip can email commuter@ripta.com. More information about the challenge is available at RIPTA.com/BiketoWork.
