MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — Portsmouth boys lacrosse leaned on a dominant performance at the faceoff X and a six-goal night from Rafe Dionne to roll past Middletown 10-3 at Gaudet Field on Friday.
Dionne, a junior attackman, scored six times to lead all scorers. Senior attackman Ted Gersen added three goals, and senior midfielder Luke Brandariz had a goal and two assists.
The Patriots controlled possession all night thanks to freshman Liam Bowley, who went 10-for-15 at the faceoff X and scooped up six ground balls. Portsmouth coach Tom Willauer recognized Bowley with a game ball after the win.
Goalie John Colna stopped eight Middletown shots in net for the Patriots.
Portsmouth scored two goals in the first quarter, four in the second, two in the third and two in the fourth to put the game away.
Middletown’s three goals came from Grayson Hawkins, Alexander O’Shea and Matthew Stevens, with O’Shea also picking up an assist. Senior midfielder Jackson Brower contributed an assist.
Junior goalie Corey Chiodo was the bright spot for the Islanders, turning aside 18 shots in net — including seven in the fourth quarter alone — to keep the score from getting away further.
The loss drops Middletown to a record that now sits below .500. Coach Chris Smith’s team came in at 5-5.
