The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority will shift construction on the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge to overnight hours beginning May 31, the agency announced.
Work will take place Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., according to the authority. The change follows reports of traffic delays during daytime hours.
“We noted more traffic outside of the usual rush hour patterns and heard from many of our motorists that they were experiencing travel delays,” said Lori Caron Silveira, the authority’s executive director. “We have listened, we share your concerns, and we want to be responsive to the community and to our motorists.”
Silveira said plates covering the work area will remain in place, so drivers should still expect bumps through the zone.
The authority said it is replacing the bridge’s original seven joints in a capital project that was put out for bid in 2025 and covers both the eastbound and westbound spans. Work has begun on the westbound side and is expected to be completed this fall.
The authority said the night work will generate construction noise and requires additional safety precautions. The suggested travel speed through the work zone is 25 mph.
