Commuters are invited to leave the car at home this Friday as Bike Newport and RIPTA Commuter Resources host the annual Bike to Work Day, part of May is Bike Month on Aquidneck Island.
From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, May 15, organizers will greet bike commuters in front of Newport City Hall at 43 Broadway with breakfast snacks and swag. The day will close with a 4:30 p.m. gathering for community announcements and the presentation of the Bike Friendly Business of the Year Award, followed by a 5 p.m. group ride along the Newport Bike Path to Newport Craft Brewery.
This year’s event is sponsored by Southcoast Health.
“Southcoast Health is proud to support Bike Newport and initiatives like Bike to Work Day, which help build healthier communities through wellness, movement and active living,” spokesperson Adam DeFrias said.
Drive Less RI is also among the participating partners.
Organizers say commuters who cannot ride directly from home have options. The Newport Park & Bike lot, located along the Newport Bike Path, offers free parking, and the Newport County YMCA on Valley Road welcomes riders to use its upper lot to park and pedal into town. RIPTA routes 14, 24L, 60, 63, 64, 67 and 68 all serve Newport and are equipped with bike racks.
