IYRS School of Technology & Trades Launches New Runabout Restoration Course (IYRS)

IYRS School of Technology & Trades has announced the launch of a new Runabout Restoration Course, a 9-month hands-on program designed for experienced boatbuilders, classic runabout enthusiasts and those looking to break into the boatbuilding trade.

The pilot course offers students the opportunity to work through the full restoration process of a classic mahogany Chris-Craft, from structural rebuild to final water testing. The curriculum covers shop safety, tool use and woodworking terminology before advancing into structural restoration — including the bottom, keel, frames, topsides, deck planking, interior upholstery, finishes, mechanical systems, wiring and engine installation.

“From surveying and disassembly to finishing brightwork and marine systems installation, this course offers an unparalleled, real-world restoration experience,” said Bjorn Bakken, an internationally acclaimed master woodworker and course instructor. “Students will gain expertise in traditional woodworking techniques, project documentation, historical research, and professional trades skills as they bring a historic runabout back to life.”

The program meets Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at IYRS’s Restoration Hall at 449 Thames St. in Newport. Enrollment is limited, and the application deadline is June 7, 2026.

The course is non-accredited and not eligible for federal financial aid, though limited scholarship opportunities are available.

“This program offers a rare opportunity for students to fully immerse themselves in the restoration of a classic mahogany runabout,” said IYRS President Kern Maass.

Founded in 1993 as the International Yacht Restoration School, IYRS offers four full-time accredited programs across the marine trades and modern manufacturing fields.
