The Newport Water Division will conduct its fall water main flushing program from Oct. 13-30, with crews working overnight hours across Aquidneck Island.
The maintenance program will run from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night, with signs posted in advance of work in each area.
Residents may experience discolored water and low water pressure during the flushing process, according to Tom Shevlin, communications officer for the city. The discoloration can affect areas beyond those being actively flushed.
“If you encounter discolored water following the hydrant flushing, run the cold water taps throughout your home (bathroom sinks and tubs, kitchen faucets, etc.) for five to 10 minutes or until water clears,” Shevlin said in a press release issued Thursday.
Officials recommend minimizing water use during flushing hours. The schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions.
This year’s program includes a new flushing plan for the High Zone recommended by Pare Engineering to improve water quality.
