The Museum of Newport Irish History will present the second talk of its 24th Annual Lecture Series on Monday, featuring historian Dr. Timothy J. Meagher discussing the transformation of Irish American identity across four decades.
Meagher, retired professor of history and archivist at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., will deliver “Irish American Identity in Transition: A Tale of Two Waves of Immigration, 1880s-1920s” at 6 p.m. at the Wyndham Newport Hotel, 240 Aquidneck Ave.
The lecture, made possible by a gift from Larry Bartley, will examine the contrasting experiences of two waves of Irish immigrants during the 40 years surrounding the turn of the 20th century. Meagher will work with Professor John Quinn of Salve Regina University and the audience to explore how these changes affected Newport’s Irish community.
The event will be available both in person and via Zoom. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with complimentary light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar available.
Copies of Meagher’s latest book, “Becoming Irish American: The Making and Remaking of a People From Roanoke to JFK,” published by Yale University Press, will be available for purchase and signing after the talk, courtesy of Charter Books.
Reservations are required for both in-person and virtual participation. In-person attendance costs $5, while Zoom participation is free.
