Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025 – meaning you get an extra hour of sleep this weekend!

Look for lighter mornings, but for it to get darker much earlier in the evening:

  • On Saturday, Nov. 1, the sun will rise in Newport at 7:18 a.m. and will set at 5:40 p.m. There will be 10 hours and 22 minutes of sun.
  • On Sunday, Nov. 2, the sun will rise in Newport at 6:19 a.m. and will set at 4:39 p.m. There will be 10 hours and 20 minutes of sun.

Before you go to bed Saturday night, remember to change your clocks and also take this opportunity to check or change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Fire safety experts remind homeowners and renters that in the event of a fire, you may have less than three minutes to get out of your home. Regular testing and maintenance of smoke alarms can be lifesaving. Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home, inside and outside sleeping areas, and should be tested monthly. The devices should be replaced every 10 years, while carbon monoxide alarms need replacement every seven years.

For a comprehensive fire safety checklist and more information regarding fire safety and injury prevention, visit the Rhode Island Division of Fire Safety website or FEMA’s fire prevention resources.

Daylight saving time returns at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2026, when clocks spring forward.
