The JPT Film & Event Center will celebrate storytelling this fall with a series of special events featuring a best-selling author, a classic romantic comedy and a documentary about book bans.
Best-selling fantasy author Carissa Broadbent will appear at the theater Oct. 20 for a book signing and discussion hosted by Charter Books. The Providence-based author will be joined by fellow author Jenny L. Howe for an evening of literary discussion.
Each ticket includes a pre-signed copy of Broadbent’s latest dark romance fantasy novel, “Daughter of No Worlds.” Attendees may bring up to two of the author’s previous titles for signing, with additional books available for purchase through Charter Books.
“At The JPT, we love events that celebrate storytelling, whether that’s through film, books, or live conversation,” said Alex Whitney, general manager of The JPT. “We’re fortunate to have best-selling author Carissa Broadbent local to Rhode Island, and to collaborate with local businesses and nonprofits for community screenings.”
On Nov. 5, The JPT will screen “When Harry Met Sally,” starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, alongside a themed pop-up shop from Matriarch featuring food-related gifts. A pre-film book signing of “I’ll Have What Cheese Having” by Anne Marie Pietersma will be available. The book compiles cheese pairings inspired by romantic comedies. Mini cheeseboards from Newport Wine Cellar & Gourmet will be served during the film.
The School of Librarians RI will host a screening of “The Librarians” on Nov. 18. The documentary examines the rise of book bans targeting LGBTQIA+ and race subjects and explores how parent organizations have removed books from shelves, threatening librarians’ careers.
Whitney said the series spans from fantasy to timeless romantic comedies to exposés on censorship.
“The JPT is proud to serve as both a cultural hub and a place to experience stories both old and new together,” he said.
The JPT Film & Event Center is located in Washington Square in Newport’s historic center. The building was constructed in 1834 as a church and has shown films since the 1920s.
