Nearly 2,500 scouts and families from across New England gathered at Fort Adams State Park this holiday weekend for Adventure at the Fort, the Narragansett Council – Scouting America’s annual camporee.
More than 100 troops and packs participated in the weekend event, which offered more than 50 activities including climbing, fishing, shooting sports and sailing on Narragansett Bay. The campout took place against the backdrop of the bay and Newport Bridge at the 19th-century coastal fort.
Saturday night’s program featured scouting charges, troop leader remarks and an appearance by Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee.
“This is always an exciting weekend for our scouts,” said Tim McCandless, CEO of Narragansett Council – Scouting America. “They have the opportunity to connect with fellow scouts and troop leaders from across New England, sharpen their skills and deepen their love for scouting – all from the unique and awe-inspiring setting of a 19th-century coastal fort.”

The event included partnerships with youth programs, colleges, universities, military units, historical groups, environmental organizations and nautical clubs.
Sponsors included the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the U.S. Coast Guard, Guaranteed Builders Inc., Barrows Insurance, Cliff White and EA Dion. Enbridge served as title sponsor.
“We’re proud to support Narragansett Council – Scouting America’s Adventure at the Fort,” said Melissa Sherburne, senior advisor of stakeholder relations for Enbridge. “This organization shapes future leaders, builds character, and strengthens the communities we call home.”
The Narragansett Council serves more than 6,000 youth annually in Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts and Pawcatuck, Connecticut, through programs for boys and girls ages 6 to 20.
