Maria Nunes deSousa Alves, 88, of Portsmouth/Middletown RI, formerly of Hartford/Old Lyme CT, died Wednesday, (September 24, 2025) at her residence in Middletown. Mrs. Alves was born on Oct 22, 1936 in Santa Cruz, Madeira Island, Portugal the daughter of Joaquim and Leopoldina de Sousa. She married Manuel H. Alves in Portugal on June 1, 1961. She was a loving mother and devoted wife. She held various jobs throughout her life, including working as a seamstress. She retired with her husband in June of 1994. Mrs. Alves is predeceased by her husband, Manuel Alves, and her two brothers Jose and Adelino DeSousa. She is survived by her two sons, Licinio Alves of Portsmouth, RI and Goldino Alves of Fort Collins, CO; four grandchildren, Zachary, Kaitlyn, Julia, and Pearl, daughters-in-laws Susan and Vanessa, and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Sept 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church,2836 E Main Rd, Portsmouth, RI 02871. A family only burial will follow in Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme, CT. Calling hours will be held, preceding the funeral, on Monday, Sept 29, from 8-10 a.m. at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, RI-114, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
