Joe Logue scored just 87 seconds into Salve Regina University’s home opener Tuesday night, but Johnson & Wales University answered in the second half for a 1-1 draw in non-conference men’s soccer at Toppa Field.
The senior from Acton, Massachusetts, headed in his first goal of the season off a corner kick from junior Kevin Rivas of West Hartford, Connecticut, giving the Seahawks an early advantage in their third match of the season.
Johnson & Wales responded in the 62nd minute when Colin Laidlaw of Salt Lake City, Utah, redirected a short cross from Bruno Teixeira of Cumberland, Rhode Island. The equalizer came just over a minute after Chad Parente of Bristol, Rhode Island, initiated the corner kick sequence for the Wildcats.
Salve Regina outshot Johnson & Wales 13-10, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Seahawks goalkeeper Nick Giorgi made one save before giving way to Brennan Silva, who stopped three shots. Alexander Nardolillo recorded five saves for the Wildcats.
Ethan L’Italien led all players with four shot attempts, while Luke Woodward paced Salve Regina with three shots. The Seahawks held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks and converted their first opportunity for their lone goal.
The draw improved Salve Regina to 1-0-2 overall and kept the Seahawks unbeaten in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play at 0-0. Johnson & Wales moved to 1-2-1 overall and 0-0 in Commonwealth New England Conference action.
The series history favors Salve Regina, which leads 11-6-3 in the 20th all-time meeting between the schools. The Seahawks had won the previous two matchups, including a 2-0 victory last season in Providence.
Salve Regina returns to action Tuesday at Connecticut College in New London at 4 p.m. Johnson & Wales opens conference play Saturday at Nichols College.
