🚨 You need to know
The New York Yacht Club’s team captained by Pete Levesque sailed to victory Sunday in the 23rd New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy, claiming the club’s fourth consecutive title in the prestigious sailing competition held at Harbour Court.
The three-day regatta, which concluded Sunday after racing from Thursday through the weekend, featured teams of sailors with skippers at least 45 years old and crew over 40. Levesque’s squad, sailing with fellow skippers Tom Kinney and Brian Doyle, defeated Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead, Massachusetts, 2-0 in the finals after earning a bye by winning 17 of 21 races in preliminary round-robin competition.
“We had a fast team,” Levesque said. “TK and BD are Sonar masters, and as long as we got off the starting line, we’re pretty much in every race, just from our boatspeed.” The team raced in the club’s fleet of 22 Sonar keelboats in conditions that featured light southerly winds and strong ebb tides.
Corinthian Yacht Club earned its spot in the finals by defeating third-place finisher Eastport Yacht Club of Maryland 2-1 in the semifinals. Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club of Oyster Bay, New York, finished fourth, followed by New York Yacht Club’s Leonard team in fifth.
The regatta is part of a series of team racing events the New York Yacht Club created to promote adult team racing, beginning with the Hinman Masters in 2000. The club’s sailing schedule continues next weekend with the Grandmasters Team Race for skippers 60 and older, followed by the inaugural Great Grandmasters event for skippers 70 and older.
