JAMESTOWN, R.I. — Police are investigating after an unidentified body washed ashore near Heads Beach off Seaside Drive on Sunday morning.

The Jamestown Police and Fire departments responded to the scene at approximately 7:36 a.m. after a swimmer reported finding the body and contacted authorities.

The Rhode Island State Police, Department of Environmental Management and U.S. Coast Guard were notified. The state Medical Examiner’s Office responded and took custody of the remains.

A multi-agency investigation is underway, with Rhode Island State Police serving as the lead agency, according to a news release from Jamestown Police Chief James P. Campbell.

The person has not been identified, and no additional information was available Sunday afternoon. Police directed further questions to the Rhode Island State Police.
