Sybil Grayko, a second-grade teacher at Pell Elementary School, has earned the title of Newport Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year for 2025-2026.
With 21 years of experience in the district, Grayko stands out for her innovative approach to teaching environmental sustainability through hands-on projects.
“Newport and our students are very lucky to have such a bright, energetic, and caring teacher,” said Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D. “Ms. Grayko lights up a room the moment she enters and makes learning and being in school an adventure and fun for all. Each and every student in her classroom is made to feel special and loved. We love our Sybil Grayko!”
Grayko’s commitment to environmental education earned her an Ocean Stewardship Award from the New England Aquarium in Boston back in 2018. She led students in a campaign to reduce plastic straw use and educated them about the environmental impact of single-use plastics.
The Teacher of the Year recognition came after a nomination from fellow Pell teacher William Wilcox, followed by selection from a panel of Grayko’s peers.
“On behalf of the School Committee, I want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mrs. Grayko for her many years of dedicated service,” said Newport School Committee Chair James Dring. “She has inspired generations of students not only to strive for academic excellence, but also to become thoughtful environmental stewards. Her passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to our students and school community have left a lasting legacy. We are incredibly proud of all she has accomplished.”
