The BankNewport 10 Miler is set to return to Newport on Sunday, June 1, bringing with it road closures and potential traffic delays along the city’s picturesque waterfront.
Starting and finishing at Fort Adams State Park, the annual race will impact local traffic from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. as runners make their way around Ocean Drive and Bellevue Avenue.
The Newport Police Department will manage the roads, which will stay open to traffic throughout the morning. However, drivers should expect delays and temporary stoppages, according to a social media announcement from the City of Newport.
To ease congestion, race organizers are encouraging participants to arrive early and consider carpooling or biking. Parking is available at Fort Adams on a first-come, first-served basis.
The 10-mile course features about 350 feet of elevation gain over rolling hills, with water stops every two miles to keep runners hydrated.
The race kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with informal waves starting minutes apart, organized by pace. While runners and walkers of all speeds are welcome, participants need to maintain a 16-minute-per-mile pace to stay within the official course time limit.
After the race, runners can enjoy a beer garden provided by local craft brewery Ragged Island. All registrants 21 and older will receive a free beer.
The event supports two local charities: the Fort Adams Trust and the Boys and Girls Club of Newport County.
