Rhode Island is gearing up to hear from its residents about the state’s climate action plan. A public meeting is set for May 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Newport Public Library.

The Aquidneck Island Climate Caucus is organizing this event to get community feedback on ways to cut carbon emissions across the state. Officials from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and Office of Energy Resources will be there to give updates on the Climate Action Strategy.

This strategy is a key part of meeting the greenhouse gas reduction goals laid out in the 2021 Act on Climate. The meeting will focus on efforts to reduce emissions in areas like buildings and transportation. Residents are encouraged to share their ideas and concerns.

State Representatives Lauren Carson of Newport, Terri Cortvriend of Middletown, and Portsmouth are helping to organize this meeting as part of the Aquidneck Island Climate Caucus.

The event is family-friendly and will have light refreshments. Spanish interpretation will also be available.

This meeting is happening as Rhode Island works to put its landmark 2021 climate law into action. The Act on Climate sets ambitious targets: cutting greenhouse gas emissions 45% below 1990 levels by 2030, 80% by 2040, and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
