Bike Newport is leading a push to increase bike rack options across Aquidneck Island. The organization is giving local businesses a chance to win up to three new racks through a contest.
The nonprofit has secured 18 new bike racks with support from 11th Hour Racing. Now, they’re calling on island businesses and other spots to apply for installation.
This contest is part of Bike Newport’s “Get There By Bike” campaign, which aims to get more people cycling around the island.
“Our goal is to improve the health of our ocean, and building sustainable coastal communities is key to achieving that vision. By shifting from car travel to biking, we’re not only reducing harmful emissions but also fostering a deeper connection to our environment,” said Melvin Alvarez, grant program manager at 11th Hour Racing. “This project makes it easier for people to embrace biking as a sustainable option, helping reduce their environmental impact and support the health of our ocean.”
Businesses interested in participating need to submit an application by April 30. They should explain why they want the racks and how they plan to encourage cycling to their location.
The chosen rack model is the Westport No Scratch Rack by Sportworks, matching those already in use by the City of Newport.
Bike Newport will reveal the winners by May 10, after consulting with local officials. They expect to install the racks by the end of May, just in time for National Bike Month.
