The Tiverton Fire Department is making waves as the first in Rhode Island to equip its entire team with PFAS-free turnout gear. On Wednesday, they announced the arrival of 36 new sets of protective equipment.
PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are chemicals commonly found in firefighting gear. They’ve been linked to cancer and other serious health issues, making this upgrade a significant step for firefighter safety.
The department didn’t have to foot the bill alone. Thanks to gaming revenue and support from the Tiverton Town Council and Town Administrator, they were able to make this important change. The fire department expressed their thanks, saying, “We really appreciate your ongoing support for our team and the community we serve.”
Morning Pride supplied the new gear, while Northeast Rescue Systems helped the department throughout the buying process. Captain Gorman deserves a shout-out for overseeing the purchase and making sure the switch to PFAS-free gear went smoothly.
Even other fire departments are taking notice. Newport Navy IAFF Local F-100, which represents firefighters at Newport Naval Station, gave Tiverton Fire a pat on the back for their achievement. They’re hoping this sets a trend, saying, “Let’s see more departments follow suit!”
