The City of Newport is accepting applications for dinghy and kayak rack spaces at King Park, Wellington Ave., and Willow Street until February 28.

The Newport Harbormaster’s Office is overseeing the process, which will use a lottery system to allocate spaces. The drawing is set for March.

To apply, you need to be at least 18 and prove you live in Newport. A voter registration card or driver’s license will do the trick.

The city’s Facebook post clarifies, “We’ve got room for kayaks and dinghies up to 12 feet long. Sorry, no paddleboards or sailboats allowed on these racks.”

After the lottery, any leftover applicants will be put on a waiting list in the order they’re drawn. Winners will get an email within a week of the drawing.

If you snag a spot, you’ll need to pick up your sticker in person. Don’t dawdle though – unpaid stickers will be given to the next person in line until all spaces are filled.

Keep in mind, the waiting list is only for those who apply during the February 1-28 lottery window.
