A 58-year-old Newport man is in serious condition after being hit by a car on Connell Highway near #199 early Monday.
Newport police say the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. when a 50-year-old Middletown woman apparently had a medical issue while driving.
“Our initial findings suggest the driver’s medical condition caused her to lose control and hit a pedestrian walking on the nearby bike path,” says Sgt. Jason Head, who oversees the Newport Police Department’s Traffic Unit.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene. The injured man “suffered severe injuries”sustained significant injuries” and is now being treated at Rhode Island Hospital. He is in serious condition.
The woman behind the wheel was taken to Newport Hospital and is in stable condition.
At this point, police aren’t filing charges against the driver. They’re still looking into what exactly happened.
Head confirms that traffic in the area is back to normal following the incident.
The police department says it will share more details as they become available.
