The smash-hit musical MAMMA MIA! has broken box office records at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), becoming the highest grossing one-week Encore Series engagement in the venue’s history. The production, which played November 12-17, 2024, grossed over $1,572,000 and welcomed nearly 24,000 attendees over its eight performances.
This success smashes the previous record-holder, LES MISÉRABLES, which grossed over $1,526,000 during its eight-performance run in 2022. MAMMA MIA! also surpassed its own previous record for a highest-grossing week at PPAC, set in 2002 with $1,197,000.
J.L. “Lynn” Singleton, president and CEO of PPAC, is thrilled with the production’s success, saying, “Last week’s engagement of MAMMA MIA! at the Providence Performing Arts Center was a smashing success! Those who attended the show gave an economic boost to Providence, packing our city’s restaurants and parking lots.”
The 25th Anniversary production of MAMMA MIA! returned to PPAC for its seventh engagement since 2002. The musical, featuring the incredible songs of ABBA, tells the tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible fathers on a Greek island.
Executive Producer Amy Jacobs is grateful for the audience’s reception, saying, “On behalf of Judy Craymer and the entire Littlestar team, we are beyond thrilled with the love we have received for the 25th Anniversary tour of MAMMA MIA!. Providence audiences have embraced the show since we launched the North American tour there in 2002, and nothing brings us more joy than to share this spectacular new production with our original fans, while also introducing the show to a new generation.”
Since its London premiere in 1999 and Broadway debut in 2001, MAMMA MIA! has become a global phenomenon, seen by over 70 million people worldwide and adapted into two films, MAMMA MIA! The Movie and MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again. The musical has grossed over $4.5 billion at the box office across 50 productions in 16 languages.
