NORTH SCITUATE, R.I. – Rogers High School’s varsity football team suffered a significant defeat Friday night, losing 49-7 to Ponaganset High School during the latter’s homecoming. The loss, which drops Rogers’ overall record to 3-2, comes as the team grapples with injuries to key players.
Star running back David Rivera, Simi Lui, and other players were sidelined for the game. Their absences likely contributed to the lopsided score against a formidable Ponaganset squad.
Despite the setback, Rogers’ playoff hopes remain intact. Depending on their performance in the remaining games of the season, the team could potentially host a home playoff game.
The game, held at Ponaganset High School in North Scituate on Friday night, marked a turning point in Rogers’ season. After starting strong with a 3-1 record, including impressive wins against Middletown High School (41-35) and Chariho High School (45-0), Rogers has now lost two consecutive games.
Their previous loss came on Oct. 12 against Moses Brown High School in a close 20-17 contest.
With three regular-season games left, including a home game against East Greenwich High School on Oct. 25, the team has opportunities to regain momentum before the playoffs.
The potential for hosting a home playoff game adds an extra layer of motivation for the Rogers squad. Playoff games are scheduled to begin on Nov. 8 with the quarter-finals, followed by semi-finals on Nov. 15, both potentially at Toppa Field if Rogers secures home-field advantage.
Looking ahead, Rogers’ schedule includes the Division Championship on Nov. 24 at Cranston Stadium, should they advance that far. Additionally, a Thanksgiving Day game against Tiverton High School is set for Nov. 28 at Toppa Field, regardless of playoff outcomes.
