Rhode Islanders struggling to afford their home energy bills will get some help this winter thanks to a $24 million allocation from the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). U.S. Senator Jack Reed announced the funding release today, emphasizing its importance in helping vulnerable populations stay warm and safe during the cold weather months.

The LIHEAP funds, part of a $3.71 billion national disbursement, will be distributed to income-eligible households across the state to assist with heating costs associated with natural gas, propane, electricity, and home heating oil. Senator Reed, a strong advocate for LIHEAP funding, highlighted the program’s critical role in alleviating the energy cost burden for low-income residents who often face disproportionately higher heating costs.

“This federal funding will help keep vulnerable Rhode Islanders safe and healthy through targeted initiatives that lower utility bills,” said Senator Reed. “It will ease the energy cost burden for low-income residents, who pay a higher proportion of household income to heat their homes when cold winter weather hits.”

Applications for LIHEAP assistance are open to Rhode Islanders through the spring of 2025 or until funds are depleted. Those interested in applying can find more information and online application links on the Rhode Island Department of Human Services website or by contacting their local Community Action Agency. Eligibility is determined based on income, household size, and available resources.

Nationally, LIHEAP provided heating and cooling assistance to an estimated 5.1 million households in the previous fiscal year. Older adults on fixed incomes and individuals receiving Social Security Disability or SSI benefits are encouraged to apply early.
