The City of Newport haas welcomed Teresa Crean as its first Director of Resilience and Sustainability, effective September 30th.

Crean, an AICP-Certified Planner, brings extensive experience in municipal and state leadership roles to the position, according to a press release from the city.

In this newly created role, Crean will oversee three key City departments: Planning and Economic Development, Public Services, and Utilities.

Crean joins Newport from the Town of Barrington, where she served as Director of Planning, Building, and Resilience since 2022. Her accomplishments there include leading the development of “Ready and Resilient Barrington,” a comprehensive Climate Action Plan. Newport residents may also recognize Crean from her previous work on the City’s Sea AWARE campaign in 2013.

Crean holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse and a B.S. in Environmental Policy/Natural Resource Management from the University of Michigan. Her diverse experience spans work with non-profit regional planning commissions, private sector planning/design firms, and both municipal and state government. Crean’s selection follows a competitive search process that drew 13 qualified candidates.
