A new resolution to support local retail businesses during the holiday shopping season is on the agenda for the Newport City Council meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Several city councilors are behind this proposal, which aims to encourage shopping in Newport, especially in areas with smaller, boutique shops. These local businesses often struggle to compete with larger box stores and online retailers.
The resolution asks the City Administration to look into ways to improve the shopping experience on historic streets like Franklin St. Some ideas include better lighting, clearer signage, and upgrades to make the area safer and more appealing for pedestrians. The goal is to draw shoppers away from busier spots like Thames St.
“Our local retail businesses are gearing up for what we hope will be a strong holiday shopping season,” the resolution states.
This initiative is all about promoting the “Shop Local” message. By enhancing infrastructure and visibility, Newport aims to create a more inviting atmosphere for shoppers.
City councilors Charlie Holder, Jeanne-Marie Napolitano, Xay Khamsyvoravong, David R. Carlin III, and Angela Lima have already thrown their support behind the resolution.
If passed, the resolution will direct city officials to explore and implement ways to make Newport’s shopping districts more attractive to visitors and locals alike through lighting, signage, and other possible structure needs to “allow all pedestrians to safely walk down these streets”.
