The Puddingstone music series continues in October by welcoming SHEFFIELD CHAMBER PLAYERS to Provence sur Mer (39 Touro Street, Newport) for a late afternoon concert.

The afternoon’s performance will be dedicated to Franz Schubert’s music, complemented by a contrasting piece from acclaimed, living composer Shelley Washington. The beloved Sheffield Chamber Players, specialized in intimate performances, will perform this exceptional program, which includes Schubert’s renowned last chamber work, the String Quintet in C major.

The afternoon’s program will include “Middleground” by New York-based composer Shelley Washington. Ms. Washington’s works have been presented by leading ensembles, including the Long Beach Opera, Boston Lyric Opera company, and the Kansas City Symphony, which has performed “Middleground” numerous times.

The program will also include Franz Schubert’s “Cello Quintet” (String Quintet in C Major). Composed in September of 1828, during the final weeks of Schubert’s life, the Quintet is a rare double-cello ensemble piece that was the composer’s last instrumental works. It is considered among his greatest accomplishments.

Sheffield Chamber Players are: Sasha Callahan (Violin), Megumi Stohs Lewis (Violin), Alexander Vavilov (Viola), Leo Eguchi (Violoncello) and Eugene Kim (Violoncello).

Described by The Boston Globe as “19th-century music salon, minus the aristocratic atmosphere,” Sheffield Chamber Players was founded in 2014 on the belief that chamber music is a powerful tool for connection and community. By performing diverse repertoire in intimate settings, the players change the way listeners gather, respond to the music, and connect through a shared artistic experience. Each season, Sheffield plays dozens of concerts in a growing network of historic homes, community spaces, and other intimate venues. The group received the Harvard Musical Association’s 2023 George Henschel Community Award for its commitment to building meaningful community through music.

Acclaimed painter Oana Lauric will display new paintings, providing color and inspiration to Provence sur Mer’s intimate and beautiful performance space.

Doors open at 3:00 pm, followed by the 90-minute performance. Complementary tea, coffee and pastries will be served. Advance tickets available at PuddingstoneFestival.com.
