Newport Police Department, Newport, RI

The Newport Police Department has released its arrest and dispatch logs for the period from Friday, September 13, through Monday, September 16, 2024. The logs reveal a series of incidents primarily involving alcohol-related offenses and disorderly conduct.

While Friday saw no arrests, the weekend brought a flurry of activity for local law enforcement.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, at 12:22 am, a 27-year-old man from Pensacola, Florida, was cited for possessing an open container of alcohol in public. Just minutes later, at 12:30 am, a 22-year-old man from West Simsbury, Connecticut, received a citation for public urination.

Later that morning, at 11:20 am, Newport police arrested a 24-year-old local man on charges of disorderly conduct and simple assault or battery.

Sunday, Sept. 15, was the busiest day for police, with five separate incidents reported.

The day began with two alcohol-related citations shortly after midnight. At 12:05 am, a 23-year-old Newport resident was cited for possessing an open container of alcohol in public. Seven minutes later, a 22-year-old from Glastonbury, Connecticut, received the same citation.

The early morning hours saw two more serious incidents. At 2:14 am. a 31-year-old Newport resident was taken into custody on charges of disorderly conduct – fighting, resisting arrest, and simple assault or battery. Just one minute later, at 2:15 am, police arrested a 57-year-old from Assonet, Massachusetts, on charges of disorderly conduct and simple assault or battery.

Later that afternoon, at 1:30 pm, a 64-year-old Newport resident was cited for an animal restraint violation.

The weekend concluded with an arrest in the early hours of Monday, Sept. 16. At 1:50 am, police took a 41-year-old man into custody on charges of domestic disorderly conduct and domestic simple assault/battery. The man’s address was withheld from the report.

Editor’s Note: As of Sept. 16, What’sUpNewp no longer publishes those arrested’s names and home addresses.

“Our resources don’t allow us to follow arrests through the court system, and we’ve decided that it’s not fair to list individuals here without the follow-up results of any court proceedings,” says Ryan Belmore, Owner & Publisher of What’sUpNewp. “To follow every case throughout the court system would require time and resources we do not have available at this time.”

This policy change reflects growing concerns about privacy and the presumption of innocence, as “all persons arrested or cited are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.”

Despite this change, What’sUpNewp confirms it will continue to publish arrest and dispatch logs every weekday morning, providing the community with regular updates on local law enforcement activities.
