Liberty Square

Newport City Council will meet in Executive Session on Wednesday, June 26, before its regularly scheduled meeting.

According to a meeting notice, the City Council will meet in executive session to discuss issues related to the use of Liberty Square.

Liberty Square is across the street from the White Horse Tavern in Newport.

In 2017, the Newport Middle Passage Port Market Project, with support from the City of Newport, announced plans to commemorate the enslaved, their descendants, and Newport’s major role in the American slave trade with a “Newport Slave Trade Memorial” in Liberty Square.
