Represenative Michelle McGaw (D-Dist. 71, Portsmouth, Tiverton, Little Compton).

Today, Representative Michelle McGaw announced that she will see re-elections for House District 71.

“Representative Michelle McGaw is pleased to announce her campaign for reelection to represent District 71 in the Rhode Island State House of Representatives. Michelle McGaw was elected in 2020 to Represent District 71, which encompasses Northern Portsmouth, Southern Tiverton, and all of Little Compton. If re-elected, Michelle will embark upon her third term representing the district. Michelle has lived in Portsmouth, RI since 1991 raising a family, volunteering, and working as a pharmacist in elder care. At the State House, Michelle serves on the House Environment and Natural Resources Committee, the House Health and Human Services Committee, the House State Government and Elections Committee and the House Corporations Committee.

Michelle has been a strong advocate for better climate policy, protection of reproductive rights, improvements to healthcare, and increased participation in our state and local government. Of her work at the state house, Michelle says “In my two terms serving as State Rep, I feel we have made some great strides toward the future that my constituents elected me to advocate for. We have done a lot that I am proud of, including passing the Act on Climate, eliminating state tax on military pensions, expanding college access, capping out-of-pocket costs on certain life saving prescriptions, protecting reproductive rights, and more. There is still more work to do, and I am looking forward to using my experience and the relationships I’ve built in the State House and in the community to continue to advocate for a future we can all be proud of.”

Michelle is also a longtime advocate for involving women in politics. “Before running for office, I was involved in a lot of organizing to help get more women involved in politics, so I am particularly energized by the coalition of women representatives and senators of the East Bay. My colleagues from across the East Bay share many common priorities and I feel fortunate to have a group that supports each other’s leadership as we all row in the same direction to move our communities forward. It’s an inspiring team to be a part of.”

Michelle says she will continue to prioritize proactive climate resilience, healthcare access, education, and advocating for the individual and collective needs of the constituents of District 71 at the State House. At home, Michelle is known to be a consistent positive presence in our community. Of her community involvement, Conley Zani, President of the Common Fence Point Association says, “Michelle is always showing up for our community when we need a hand, whether it’s helping out at the community center, or neighborhood clean-ups. She’s a good leader, a team player, and a hard worker. She sees our issues and listens to us, which makes her a strong representative for our district.”

Rep. McGaw will host a family-friendly Ice Cream Social and campaign kick-off party together with Representative Terri Cortvriend on Tuesday July 9th, 5:30 – 7:30 at the Portsmouth Playground at 153 Turnpike Ave. Constituents can look forward to connecting with Michelle and Terri while enjoying treats and fun on the beautiful new playground.”
