Established in 1995 as an opportunity to encourage Rhode Islanders to experience freshwater fishing as a new outdoor experience, Free Fishing Weekend has become a popular spring pastime.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is once again offering residents and visitors the opportunity to experience freshwater fishing without a license as part of Free Fishing Weekend. This weekend takes place on Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5, 2024, and will allow anglers the chance to fish in the state’s freshwaters for all species of freshwater fish.

Normally, fishing in freshwater costs $21 for residents and $38 for nonresidents, as well as a trout conservation stamp, which can cost an additional $5.50. However, during Free Fishing Weekend, these regulations will be waived. Saltwater fishing and saltwater licenses are not included on Free Fishing Weekend.

This program, established in 1995, aims to introduce people to the joys of freshwater fishing and highlight some of the state’s best-off fishing spots. According to the DEM, freshwater regulations on size and creel limits still apply and the daily creel and possession limit for trout is five from April 13, 2024, through November 30, 2024, and two from December 1, 2024, through February 28, 2025. For more information on stocking, size, and creel limits, please visit the DEM’s website. Additional information on Free Fishing Weekend and other fishing opportunities in Rhode Island can be found on the DEM’s social media pages.
