TOUR GUIDES TIP OF THE WEEK: STAY HEALTHY
Winter brings with it the annual cold and flu season. In case you haven’t noticed, we’re in the thick of it right now!
Even with a smaller number of daily visitors, the prevalence of people under the weather, bringing their sniffles, sneezing, and coughing makes each of us a target for sickness. Our number one goal must be the protection of our health. That means taking preventative measures on a daily, even hourly basis.
For many, getting an annual flu shot is a helpful preventative. They are easy to access at local pharmacies – CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart – and are available at low or no cost, depending on your insurance coverage. A number of walk-in clinics and community centers may offer free flu shots. Ask.
A second important habit to adopt is the use of hand sanitizer on a regular basis. If you are engaged face-to-face with visitors and guests, you are being exposed to possible cold and flu germs. If you handle money, tickets, or audio tour equipment, you will be constantly picking up germs from everyone who has touched any of those items. It is important to constantly apply hand sanitizer to your hands, up to your wrists, to kill those germs.
If you work in an office environment or use computers and other hand-held devices in your work, you should always keep a supply of Clorox-type wipes handy to clean electronic devices (keyboards, tablet and computer screens, the computer mouse) and your work area each day before you begin. After you clean the equipment, use your hand sanitizer. Help ensure you and your co-workers have a germ-free (or reduced germ) environment.
If the worst happens and you get sick yourself, it is advisable to stay home from work, both to prevent spreading your sickness with others, and also to speed your own recovery to full health. Don’t be a hero nor a source of further sickness. Please stay home.
For more ideas about staying healthy, check into this year’s WELLNESS MARKETPLACE on Sunday, January 19th at the Newport Marriott. It’s part of Newport Wellness Week (January 18-25).
Till then: Be mindful. Stay pro-active. Stay healthy. Prevent and protect yourself from this year’s cold and flu season.

WINTER READING LIST ▪ UPDATE
Last week we provided a “Brief Suggested Winter Reading List” for your approval. It included half a dozen basic books about Newport, its history, and some of the features of our historic city.
Since then, the latest edition of Newport History, The Journal of the Newport Historical Society (Volume 91, Summer/Fall 2019, Number 280), arrived at our door. This issue is packed with two detailed and insightful articles of particular value to every tour guide, tourism professional, and Newporter.
The first feature story provides insights and new information about Newport’s own George Champlin Mason Jr., an architect and founder of the Rhode Island state chapter of the American Institute of Architects. An Architect and His Environment: The Career of George Champlin Mason Jr. and His Generative Role In Architectural Preservation and the American Colonial Revival, by Dr. Ronald J. Onorato, explores Mason’s architectural work as well as his trail-blazing efforts to establish the field of historic preservation. The article is richly illustrated with drawings and photos of Mason’s buildings and designs.
The second article, titled Morning at the Breakers, explores and analyzes in detail the Morning Room at The Breakers. The author, Maria Mack D’Amario, provides new insights into the room’s French décor and furnishings, as well as tracing the influence of the artistry and décor of mid-18th century Paris buildings, particularly the city’s elegant opera house, the Palais Garnier (built 1861-1875). Special attention is given to the influence and contributions of artist Paul Baudry, a fellow L’ecole des Beaux-Arts student of The Breakers architect, Richard Morris Hunt. This article, illustrated with photographs of both the Palais Garnier and The Breakers, adds much new information and history. It will bring the reader a richer appreciation of the artistry on display in The Morning Room, and further enliven the experience for visitors to The Breakers. Find out more at www.NewportHistory.org

The objects on display are some of the most iconic and celebrated of Tiffany’s works. Accompanying these works of art is an educational model illustrating the labor-intensive process of making leaded-glass shades as well as three examples of Tiffany lamp forgeries to explore issues of authenticity and connoisseurship.
