The historic John N.A.Griswold House is a National Historic Landmark and home to the Newport Art Museum since 1916.

The Newport Art Museum is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 Newport Annual Members’ Juried Exhibition. One of the Museum’s most anticipated annual events, this exhibition highlights top talent from the region, bringing together an eclectic mix of art sourced from Rhode Island and beyond. Entries are open, calling established and emerging artists alike to submit their work for exhibition and review. The resulting mix of art on display is always surprising and diverse, showcasing the varied interests and focus of our region’s passionate artists.

This year marks the 31st Newport Annual Members’ Juried Exhibition. The Newport Art Museum was privileged to have Crawford Alexander Mann III, as juror. In 2017, Mann became Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Mann selected 85 artworks from 319 submissions to be featured in the exhibition.

Newport Art Museum Executive Director Norah Diedrich and Senior Curator Francine Weiss announced the 13 award winners at an Opening Reception Friday, February 2. Jamestown, RI artist Joan M. Hall won the “Best-In-Show Award.” Other prizewinners include Eleanor Sabin (1st in Drawing/Prints/Pastels), Rupert Nesbitt (1st in Mixed Media), Kay Ritter (1st in Painting), Melissa Terry (1st in Photography), Marianne Spottswood (1st in Three-Dimensional), and Lois Erhartic (1st in Watercolor). Of Hall’s work, titled The New Normal, juror Mann said “Endlessly compelling both in its complexity and its sheer beauty.”

Visitors to the Newport Art Museum will decide the 2018 “People’s Choice Award.” Visitors may vote for their favorite piece, once per visit, through May 16, 2018. The People’s Choice winner will be announced May 18th, and the show will run through May 20, 2018. The Newport Art Museum is located at 76 Bellevue Avenue. About the Newport Art Museum

Founded in 1912, the Newport Art Museum provides exceptional arts education, public programming, community outreach, and exhibitions of historic and contemporary art, which spark reflection, inspiration, discovery, and connection – to oneself, the community and the wider world.
