The Newport Art Museum will partner with DESIGNxRI during DESIGN WEEK RI 2017.
DESIGN WEEK RI is the brainchild of DESIGNxRI, and is happening all over our fair state from September 13-24. This 12-day extravaganza spotlights the talent, innovation, and influence of the Rhode Island design community with talks, tours, lunches, and more. We are excited to take part again this year, along with an impressive group of design leaders, partners and talent in the state. Join us at the Museum during Art After Dark on September 14 for what will surely be an exciting talk: Art, Fashion & Celebrity Culture with Designer Leah Benjamin. Benjamin, a local fashion designer, will present her work, share her inspiration, and stir the melting pot of art, culture, celebrity in the post millennium.
Leah Benjamin has worked as a fashion designer, educator, and artist for over 20 years. Her work for Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Tory Burch has been featured inElle, Bazaar, W, Vogue, Paris Vogue, and the cover of Self and Surface, with additional designs worn on the red carpet by Naomi Watts, Jessica Alba, and Liv Tyler.
She is currently working in collaboration with the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, Ms. Lauryn Hill, for the 2017 North American Tour. Ms. Hill and Nas, one of the great kings of hip-hop, will perform in Boston at the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion on Tuesday, September 12 (just 2 days before this talk!).
This unique event will allow us a glimpse behind the scenes with a Rhode Island native whose path has led her around the world and back home, where she lives an intentionally secluded life on her farm in Hopkinton, RI. Ms. Benjamin received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York, NY. She has also been an arts educator for over 20 years, including faculty, critic, outreach and teaching at RISD, The Newport Art Museum, The Art Institute of NYC, The MOMA and The Art Students League of NY.
The talk is FREE, but preregistration is strongly recommended via the Museum website, or DESIGNxRI website. Link below:
