New Bedford Folk All Weekend
The New Bedford Folk Festival is a bit of a hidden jewel. It doesn’t always get the attention of another festival coming soon to Newport, but the event this weekend features top folk and roots performers from around the country and around the world. It’s affordable and easy to get to – plus, they’ve added a family tent this year. Headliners include Patty Larkin, Vance Gilbert, Aoife O’Donovan and Joshua Davis. Details here.
Go Retro at Fenway
Fenway Park will be rocking Friday night, July 7 for a major show with country duo Florida Georgia line. The popular duo of Brian Kelley (from Florida) and Tyler Hubbard (from Georgia) has risen to the top of the country charts in recent years. The music begins at 6PM with openers Backstreet Boys, Nelly and Chris Lane. 80’s fan need to come back Saturday night July 8 for an equally impressive bill with New Kids on the Block, Paula Abdul, and Boyz II Men. The FGL show is listed as sold out, but tickets remain for the NKOTB show Saturday. Details here.
NIMFEST continues this Sunday July 9 with three top local artists heading to Newport’s Kings Park. Ghost folk diva Allysen Callery will be joined by Newport rockers Silverteeth and the Randy Robbins Trio for a beautiful afternoon of music overlooking the bay. Its free – and family friendly, with free parking, food trucks and more. The series continues through August. Details here.
Livingston Taylor Sunday
Sunday July 9, folk favorite Livingston Taylor will be playing a benefit show in Narragansett. Livingston has been performing and recording almost as long as older brother James, gaining a major following over the years. Check out his sound – familiar, yet unique, on “Life is Good,” here. The 6PM show at the Aqua Blue Hotel and Conference Center is a benefit for Congregation Beth David in Narragansett. Details here.
Newport Music Festival
Like folk and jazz, classical music is a summer tradition in Newport. This weekend is the start of the Newport Music Festival with over 50 concerts at several venues including special performances in the historic Newport mansions. The theme this year is Beethoven, and our pick this weekend is Sunday’s concert at Chateau-Sur-Mer featuring the composer’s chamber music and piano sonatas. Complete festival details here.
Greg Allman Tribute Friday
The music world is still reeling from the recent loss of Greg Allman. Friday at Chan’s, Gregg’s son Michael Allman, along with Jeff Pitchell and Texas Flood, present a tribute show to the beloved leader of the Allman Brothers. Two shows are scheduled, the first is sold out but tickets are still available for the 10PM show. Details here.
