Mary Walsh Nunes, 85, of Newport, passed away Friday March 17, 2017 at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 28th, 1931 in Newport RI. She was the daughter of John J and Margaret (O’Hanley) Walsh. Mary is survived by her sister, Sr. Anne Walsh, OSU. Mary is also survived by her eight children: Joseph III (Cheryl) of Cordova, TN, Michael (Colleen) of West Nyack, NY, Peter (Kathy) of Jacksonville, FL, Andrew (Valerie), Melrose MA, Anne Fleet (James), Barrington, RI, Mary O’Connor (Bill), Middletown RI, Matthew (Marie), Newport RI, Mark (Myken), Bellevue, WA. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and an aunt to 52 nieces and nephews.

She attended St. Catherine School. She was an active member of the class, participant of the basketball team and 3-year class president. She earned her BA from the College of New Rochelle. She was married at St. Mary’s church on September 26, 1953. Mom loved to remark how John and Jacqueline Kennedy asked Joe and Mary to change their wedding date, instead JFK and Jackie were married 2 weeks earlier.

Mom, in addition to raising a large family also had a successful career teaching elementary school for 26 years. Mom had a very strong faith and passed that on to her family and all those who came to know her. She had a calm presence despite her worries for all her family.

She was known to pack the cooler and the kids in the car and head to 3rd, 2nd or Hazards Beach. Mom loved big family dinners, beach cookouts, and tailgating at Holy Cross. Family and time together were cherished by mom and dad. We have fond memories of our time spent together camping, skiing and many great adventures including a 5-week cross country trip in an RV with the entire family. Many great experiences were shared with the Bill and Sheila Durgin family. The 3 youngest Walsh children, Sheila, Anne and Mary, were not only family but lifelong friends,” the dolly sisters”.

Her home was always full and a welcoming place to all our extended family and friends. Many guests came to know and love Newport through mom’s open door policy and her spirit of love and kindness.

Mom was able to stay in the family home with the support of dedicated health professionals especially Julie, Deb M, Kerri and Kim. Our family thanks them for the warmth and compassion they provided to her and her loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ursuline Sisters of the Eastern Province USA www.osueast.org
