There’s Christmas In Newport, Newport Holiday Stroll and dozens of other events happening throughout Newport to celebrate the holidays this December. What’sUpNewp went through many different calendars to narrow down a list of events that you shouldn’t miss. Here are our 20 favorite things happening in and around Newport this December;

1 – Opening of Christmas In Newport (Dec. 1)

Founded in 1971, Christmas in Newport began as a two-week festival that celebrated the noncommercial traditions of the holiday season. Now in its 46th year, the annual program boasts multiple activities for nearly each day of the December calendar.

Christmas In Newport, a city-wide celebration fostering the historic traditions of the holiday season, kicks off at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 1st at Washington Square with a proclamation from the Mayor, tree lighting, Newport Artillery cannon salute and live entertainment.

2 – Christmas at Newport Mansions (Dec. 1 – 31)

The glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver will dazzle you as you tour three magnificent mansions decked out in Yuletide finery. Music, tours, and spectacular decorations highlight the celebration of Christmas at the Newport Mansions. The Preservation Society of Newport County invites you to make holiday memories with your family by visiting The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House this holiday season – November 19, 2016 to January 2, 2017.

3 – Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff (Nov. 29 – Dec. 2)

Join IMC this holiday season for a one-of-a-kind performance of The Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff. Set within the romantic rooms of Rosecliff mansion, you don’t want to miss this ballet. The secret of A Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff is in its sense of scale, proportion, musicality and good stage manners. 4 – Barrel Of Laughs Winter Comedy Series (Dec. 2)

Join Newport Vineyards for an evening of wine and a barrel of laughs as host and comedian Jeremy Furtado welcomes Emily Ruskowski, special guest Mike Holmesand and headliner Orlando Baxter. Orlando has performed around the globe including The New York Comedy Contest, NBC’s ‘Stand Up for Diversity’, The Boston Comedy Festival, and The Montreux Comedy Festival in Switzerland. In 2012 he toured across the U.S. with national headliner Jo Koy, as the opening act in the “Lights Out” tour, before making TV appearances on AXS TV’s ‘Gotham Live’. In 2016, Orlando’s talent took him back overseas where he debut his show “Suspension, Detentions, and Summer Vacations” at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. 5 – Bowen’s Wharf 46th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting (Dec. 3)

Bowen’s Wharf invites you to bring the whole family to see Frosty the Snowman, Santa, and Mrs. Claus for an evening of Christmas cheer! Make a day of it and check off that holiday gift list at our retail shops open 10-8 Fridays and Saturdays with in-store promotions, gift wrapping and other perks!

Festivities begin at 4:30 with Frosty the Snowman! The Christmas Carol Sing-a-long begins at 5 pm, the Mayor lights the tree at 6 pm immediately followed by Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving by boat (weather permitting).  Restaurants & shops are open before and after the event.

6 – Inaugural Newport Holiday Stroll (Dec. 3 & 4, 10 & 11)

7 – UnDecked Halls at Rough Point (Dec. 3, 10, 17, 27)

Experience the quiet house, see the decorated staff wing, and hear about Miss Duke’s tropical holiday. Learn how Rough Point’s winter caretaking traditions have remained the same for the past half century. 9 – A Jubilant Bach Christmas (Dec. 4)

The Rhode Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra, conducted by Edward Markward, will present J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (sung in English), featuring soprano Dana Varga, mezzo-soprano Teresa Buchholz, tenor Jesse Darden, and bass-baritone Colin Levin at St. Joseph’s Church. The Chorale will be joined by the CCRI Chamber Singers, Dr. Joseph Amante y Zapata, Director. More Info

10 – 9th Annual Singing for Shelter Acoustic Christmas Concert (Dec. 8)

Mark and Anne Gorman of Newport will be hosting their 9th Annual Singing For Shelter acoustic Christmas concert, for the benefit of Lucy’s Hearth and The McKinney Shelter, on Thursday, December 8th at Channing Memorial Church.

14 – Holiday Open House at Redwood Library (Dec. 10)

The Holiday Open House will feature music from a live choir, special tours, a seasonal exhibition of vintage Christmas books, children’s craft, refreshments…even a special appearance by Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. All visitors will have a chance at winning special raffle prizes! The Open House is a great opportunity for members and the public to learn more about the Library’s history, its collections, and its vibrant programming. More Info

15 – Christmas with the Whitehornes (Dec. 10)

Step back in time and experience the traditional Christmas festivities of early 1800s Newport at the Whitehorne House. Interact with costumed interpreters portraying life in the Whitehorne House as they prepare for Christmas. Learn about the differences between holiday celebrations past and present from decorations to dining and even Christmas trees. Receive a booklet of authentic recipes from Mrs. Whitehorne’s own Sugar House Book. This interactive family program is presented by the Newport Restoration Foundation and the Newport Historical Society. More Info

17 – Cinema For A Cause: Elf (Dec. 11)

The Jane Pickens Theater and Event Center & Newport’s Memorial Funeral Home present the annual screening of Elf as a food drive to benefit the vitally important local non-profit Martin Luther King Center in Newport. On December 11 at 1 p.m at The JPT, 49 Touro Street, Newport the now-classic holiday film elf- starring a hilarious Will Ferrell alongside Hollywood movie royalty James Caan. Elf has in recent years reached the status of not-to-be-missed Christmastime film. Directed by Jon Favreau (who also shares co-writer credit), elf is the touching and side-splitting story of a north pole toymaker who sets off to the Big Apple in search of his father.

This community event will benefit the MLK Community Center- which now in their 94th year of operation counts among their many missions and programs hunger services for local families in need of assistance, especially around the holidays. The 501(c)(3) also runs a daily breakfast program, a food pantry and a monthly food delivery program called Food 2 Friends. They are a vital organization to Newport County.

The only price of admission is a canned good (as much as you’d like to give). All donations will benefit local citizens.

Family and friends, young and old are invited to experience a film that truly entertains across generations. There is something for all in this magical story, as there should be plentiful food for all who are hungry. The Jane Pickens Theater and Event Center encourages those attending to arrive early for the solo afternoon showing which has become ever more popular as the event gains notice.
