The Miss Rhode Island Scholarship Organization crowned its new Miss Rhode Island and Miss Rhode Island’s Outstanding Teen at the Casino Theater in Newport on Sunday evening.

Out of the more than 20 contestants, Shruti Nagarajan was crowned Miss Rhode Island 2016 and Kate Depetro took the crown for Miss RI Outstanding Teen 2016.

While this was the first time the competition was held in Newport, there were three local contestants: Miss Aquidneck Island 2016 Jennifer Woods, Miss Newport 2016 Abigail Verille and Miss Newport Harbor Nicolette Peloquin!

The Miss Rhode Island program is an official preliminary competition of the Miss America Scholarship Organization, which provides millions of dollars in scholarships to young women every year. Winners of the Miss Rhode Island and Miss Rhode Island’s Outstanding Teen pageants will go on to compete for national titles at Miss America and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen!
