To the Editor:
I, Robert Power, am running for Newport School Committee to keep the auto technology and cosmetology programs incorporated into the new Rogers High School campus. The auditorium and gym have been torn down and replaced with unfortunately, smaller versions of each. But, taking down the building that houses auto-tech and cosmetology to run a sewer line and utility lines through there to save money, is an action distracting and depleting student programs that are fully subscribed. Why did I draw a line in the sand to reverse this action? Because as a retired Newport school administrator, I have seen the worth of these programs both in school and after the students graduate. Not only do I have a doctorate in education, but I also have experience working with and on school committees. My negotiating skills and passion for standing up for what is right for the students will help Newport find a solution to either include these programs in the new building or preserve them in the existing structure. I’m asking for your support and vote in my bid to get elected to be on the school committee. Thank you.
Dr. Robert Power
