John Martin Hunt, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left us on September 2, 2026, just a day after celebrating his 91st birthday. Born on September 1, 1935, John lived a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
John proudly served in the U.S. Navy and he carried that sense of pride throughout his life. After his service, he dedicated many years to his work as an admitting clerk at Newport Hospital, where he was well-respected and made friends with everyone he met.
An avid bowler, John enjoyed the sport tremendously and proudly displayed a trophy for his perfect score. He was also a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, never missing a chance to cheer them on.
He is survived by his daughter, Christine Bettencourt, and his two loving grandchildren, Amy and Alyson. John was also a doting great-grandfather to Madison Stewart, and Louis Oliveri Jr, who were the light of his life.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Hunt and his parents, Warren Hunt and Dorothy (Brown) Hunt.
Visiting Hours will take place on Tuesday, September 15th from 10:00-11:00am at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway Newport, RI 02840. A Burial will follow with Military Honors at the RI Vets Cemetery, Exeter, RI.
Though he may have left this world, John’s spirit and the joy he brought to those around him will always be remembered. Rest in peace, John; you will be deeply missed.
