Amity Island is coming back to Washington Square.
The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center will once again kick off summer with its annual “Jaws” party on Friday, May 29, before returning the Steven Spielberg classic to the big screen for three more screenings in July.
The annual celebration of the 1975 blockbuster, presented in partnership with What’sUpNewp and Narragansett Beer, has become one of the JPT’s most popular events. Last summer, the theater sold out three “Jaws” screenings in May before bringing the film back for a Labor Day run tied to the movie’s 50th anniversary.
The May 29 kickoff party begins with doors at 6 p.m., live music from The Teledynes at 6:30 p.m. and the film at 7:30 p.m. The lobby will feature a shark touch tank presented by Save The Bay, along with a Narragansett Beer tasting and the brewery’s signature Gansett x Jaws merchandise.
Three more screenings follow in July. The Teledynes return on Friday, July 17, with doors at 6 p.m., music at 6:30 and the film at 7:30. On Saturday, July 18, Sharks Come Cruisin’ will take the stage on the same schedule. A Sunday, July 19, matinee at 4:30 p.m. is billed as “strictly the film for those who just want to see shark on screen.”
The 1975 film stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as ichthyologist Matt Hooper and Robert Shaw as ship captain Quint, who team up to hunt a great white shark terrorizing the fictional New England resort town of Amity Island after a young woman is killed while skinny-dipping near the beach.
The JPT is encouraging fans to buy tickets early, noting last year’s events sold out.
