Jamestown Police Department

A woman in the custody of the Jamestown Police Department escaped from Newport Hospital on Monday morning after slipping out of her handcuffs, according to a statement from the department.

At approximately 8:20 a.m., the woman reported feeling ill while officers were preparing to transport her to Newport District Court for an arraignment on a reckless driving charge and a probation violation. Emergency medical services were called and she was transported to Newport Hospital for evaluation under police supervision.

While at the hospital, the woman manipulated her handcuffs and walked out of the examination room. She was located later Monday afternoon inside a business in North Kingstown and taken into custody without incident.

The incident remains under investigation.
