The city is asking residents for feedback as it explores how to fund its growing stormwater infrastructure needs.
An online survey is now available at www.surveymonkey.com/r/Y8KWCW8.
The city recently completed installation of a tide gate under King Park, which has dramatically reduced stormwater flooding along Wellington Avenue in the Fifth Ward. However, stormwater issues continue to challenge other parts of the city.
Newport’s utility bills currently include fees for drinking water, sewer and stormwater charges. Revenue collected does not go to the city’s general fund but instead goes into an enterprise fund, meaning the amount residents pay covers the entire cost of providing each system’s service, maintenance, repair and any needed improvements.
The city said it has worked hard in recent years to improve its stormwater and wastewater systems and is now reviewing how these services are funded to ensure the system is fair, transparent and flexible.
Resident feedback will help the city understand the issues that matter most to the community and shape its approach to future stormwater funding, according to the city.
Those who would like to learn more about the current utilities system and why the city is looking at creating a stormwater utility can view a recap of the recent Stormwater Open House at www.CityofNewport.com/TV under the Community Meetings tab.
