The City of Newport announced Friday the launch of its newly revised community grant programs, opening funding opportunities for local nonprofit organizations serving the community’s most vulnerable residents.
Applications for fiscal year 2027 grants will be accepted through an online portal opening Nov. 13, with a firm deadline of Dec. 5. The initiative represents a significant overhaul of how the city distributes funding to community-based organizations.
The revamped program comes after the City Council earlier this year directed the administration to create a centralized grants system with a competitive and transparent review process, marking a shift toward more strategic allocation of community resources.
Two grant categories
Newport’s community grant programs now include two distinct funding streams:
Civic Support Grants will provide annual assistance to local nonprofits delivering vital community programs across various sectors.
Special Projects Grants will focus specifically on initiatives addressing the needs of Newport residents affected by opioid and substance use disorders.
“Through these programs, the city aims to strengthen community resilience by investing in organizations that improve quality of life — particularly for low- and moderate-income residents and families,” said City Manager Colin Kennedy in the announcement.
Funding sources and focus areas
Kennedy emphasized that the grants will be funded through legal settlement proceeds and public trust earnings rather than tax dollars, allowing for strategic distribution to organizations making measurable local impact.
The programs prioritize nonprofits advancing economic and community development, public health and well-being, access to arts and cultural programming, youth recreation and engagement, and senior services and inclusion.
Application requirements and timeline
Only recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply. Late submissions will not be accepted, according to the press release.
