More than 1,100 women in Rhode Island and more than 316,000 women nationally will be diagnosed by the end of this year with breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. That diagnosis will present what will seem for many insurmountable physical and emotional challenges.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we caught up with Dr. Robert Legare, medical director of the Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center, associate professor of medical oncology at Yale School of Medicine.
We talked to Dr. Legare about symptoms, treatment, risk factors, clinical trials and much more as 1,140 women in Rhode Island, 316,950 women nationally, and 2,800 men nationally face a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2025, according to the American Cancer Society.
And while the number of people diagnosed with breast cancer continues to increase, the mortality rate is dropping dramatically, Dr. Legare said. Still, according to the American Cancer Society, 42,170 women and 510 men will die of breast cancer in 2025.
