newport gulls

Good morning, Newport! 🗓️ Today is Sunday, Aug. 3, the 215th day of 2025. There are 150 days left in the year.

🚨 You need to know

The Newport Gulls will host the Mystic Schooners in a winner-take-all Game 3 of their New England Collegiate Baseball League quarterfinal series tonight at 6:35 p.m. at Cardines Field. The decisive matchup will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The series is tied 1-1 after Mystic kept its season alive with a comeback victory Saturday night at Fitch High School. The Schooners overcame an early 2-0 deficit, scoring four runs in the second inning to take control and eventually winning by multiple runs. Newport had taken the series opener in a pitchers’ duel but couldn’t complete the sweep on the road.

Colby Wallace of East Carolina provided the early fireworks for Newport in Saturday’s Game 2, launching his first home run of the summer — a two-run blast in the first inning. However, Mystic responded immediately with timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. Eric Cha’s bloop single in the second inning gave the Schooners their first lead, while Jake Kernodle and AJ Aschettino added insurance runs.

The Gulls mounted a seventh-inning rally, scoring three runs on a combination of small ball and clutch hitting from Adam Agresti of St. John’s, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Mystic’s lead. Newport stranded multiple runners in scoring position throughout the game, unable to capitalize on opportunities against the Schooners’ bullpen.

Tonight’s winner advances to the NECBL semifinals, while the loser’s season comes to an end. Both teams have shown they can score runs and get quality pitching, setting up what should be an exciting conclusion to this quarterfinal series at historic Cardines Field.
