The BankNewport Charitable Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to Sail Newport to support its 4th Grade Science and Sailing Program, a free experiential learning initiative that combines sailing instruction with environmental science education for students at Pell Elementary School.
The program, now in its eighth year since launching in 2017, serves more than 120 students annually and provides all equipment, staffing, facilities, transportation and snacks at no cost to families. During the 2024-2025 school year, 126 fourth-grade students participated, with more than 70% receiving free or reduced lunch.
“There’s something really special about watching Newport’s kids light up when they’re out on the water—many for the very first time,” said Jack Murphy, president and CEO of BankNewport. “Sail Newport’s commitment to access, education, and hands-on learning leaves a lasting impression.”
The 16-week program takes place at Sail Newport’s facility within Fort Adams State Park, where students spend structured time each week learning about Narragansett Bay’s ecology, weather and history while receiving hands-on sailing instruction. The curriculum reinforces state STEM standards and accommodates students with social, emotional, physical or developmental challenges.
According to Sail Newport, the program engages populations often under-represented in sailing and has inspired additional marine education opportunities, including the Thompson Middle School Marine Exploration Program and summer youth sailing programs.
BankNewport, founded in 1819, operates 19 branch locations throughout Rhode Island and has awarded more than $7.7 million in grants, sponsorships and donations over the past five years through its All In Giving program.
The bank’s charitable foundation focuses on supporting nonprofits in areas including basic human needs, children and families, education, economic security, healthy lives, arts and culture, and the environment.
