Rhode Island FC clinches its first home win at Centreville Bank Stadium, edging out North Carolina FC 2-1 in a nail-biting match that came down to a stoppage-time penalty kick.

The team’s historic victory unfolded Saturday in front of 7,072 fans in downtown Pawtucket. Maxi Rodriguez sealed the deal in the 95th minute, converting a crucial penalty.

Rhode Island FC (4-6-3) jumped ahead early when Albert Dikwa “Chico” nodded in a cross from Aldair Sanchez in the 18th minute. North Carolina FC (6-4-2) answered back in the 35th minute with Rafa Mentzingen’s solo effort, leveling the score.

The game remained tight until the final moments when Frank Nodarse drew a penalty in the box. Rodriguez stepped up and delivered, netting his second goal of the regular season and fourth across all competitions.

Aimé Mabika took on the captain’s role for the first time in his Rhode Island FC stint, while Dani Rovira made his debut off the bench in the second half.

Rhode Island FC’s homestand continues on June 21, as they host Sacramento Republic FC for a “School’s Out” night. Fans can look forward to postgame fireworks to cap off the evening.
