Governor Dan McKee will sign a bill today (June 11) that will rename the Sakonnet River Bridge after Staff Sergeant Christopher Potts, a soldier from Tiverton who died while serving in Iraq.

The ceremony is set for 3 p.m. in the Governor’s State Room at the Rhode Island State House in Providence.

Staff Sgt. Potts was 38 when he lost his life in Iraq back in 2004. The bridge’s new name – Staff Sergeant Christopher Potts Sakonnet River Bridge – will stand as a tribute to his sacrifice.

Several important guests will be there, including Representative Samuel Azzinaro, Senator Walter Felag, and Brigadier General Andrew J. Chevalier from the Rhode Island National Guard.

Retired Lieutenant General Reggie Centracchio and members of Staff Sgt. Potts’ family are also planning to attend the signing.

Rep. Azzinaro and Sen. Felag introduced the bill to rename the bridge, showing support from both parties for honoring fallen service members.
